The Ashba Flaxseed Curling Custard is a curl defining custard for curly hair that gives daily defined, separated curls with medium-strong hold — without the crunch. It is a curly hair gel, its hold comes from real flax seed and chia seed gel and plant-based bio-polymers, not petroleum-based synthetic ones, so curls stay soft, springy, and clump beautifully on everyday wear.
Who's it for
Best For
- Curly hair that wants daily defined, separated curls
- A curl enhancing styler that defines without stiffness or a productye feeling
- Medium to coarse curls that hold a medium-strong style well
- Frizzy curly hair that needs definition and frizz control in one step
- Anyone wanting plant-based hold instead of synthetic film-formers
- Everyday wear in normal weather — not peak monsoon (reach for the gel then)
By Curl Pattern
- Curly hair (3A to 3C) — the core hair type this curling custard is built for
- Coily hair (4A to 4C) — defines and clumps tight coils; layer over Curl Moisture Milk for extra moisture
- Wavy hair (2A to 2C) — only coarse waves; fine waves should use a lighter styler instead
By Hair Density
- Medium to coarse strands — the ideal match; carries the defined hold without going stiff
- Fine strands — can be too heavy; try Curl Styling Serum or Curl Volumizing Foam instead
By Gender
- A curl defining custard men, women, and all genders can use — formulated for curl pattern and hold, not gender
What it does
- Defines and separates curls — as a curl enhancing cream, it turns loose or undefined curls into clean, springy clumps for daily wear
- Medium-strong hold — holds definition all day in normal weather without the stiffness of a strong-hold gel
- Plant-based bio-polymers — hold comes from flax seed, chia seed, and naturally derived film-formers, not petroleum-based synthetic ones
- Controls frizz — seals the cuticle so curls stay smooth and defined through the day
- Moisturizes while it styles — flax, chia, argan, and avocado oils keep curls soft, not dry
- Silicone-free and CGM-friendly — no silicones, parabens, mineral oils, drying alcohols, or synthetic polymers; washes out clean with no buildup
How to use
- Start on soaking wet hair, after Ashba Leave-In Conditioner (or Curl Moisture Milk for coarse, dry hair).
- Take a generous amount and smooth it over each section with praying hands, then rake through with your fingers.
- Scrunch upward, cupping sections in your palm, to form defined curl clumps.
- Air dry or diffuse on low heat. Don't touch hair while it dries.
- The custard sets to a soft cast — much lighter than a strong-hold gel. Once dry, scrunch gently with your palms to soften it into touchable, defined curls.
- For more hold on a humid day, layer a little Curl Defining Gel over the custard.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a curling custard and how is it different from a gel or cream?
A curling custard is a styling product that sits between a gel and a cream. It defines and holds curls like a gel, but with a softer, more moisturizing finish closer to a cream. The Ashba Flaxseed Curling Custard gives medium-strong hold and defined, separated curls for daily wear — firmer than a leave-in or styling serum, but softer and less stiff than a strong-hold gel.
Show all FAQs
Is Flaxseed Curling Custard a flaxseed gel for curly hair?
Yes — it's built on real flax seed and chia seed gel, making it a natural flaxseed gel for curly hair. Flaxseed has been used for generations to define and hold curls. The custard combines that traditional flaxseed hold with argan and avocado oils for moisture, so you get definition without the dryness that plain DIY flaxseed gel can cause.
What's the difference between Flaxseed Curling Custard and Curl Defining Gel?
Both define curls, but they sit at different points on the hold spectrum. The Flaxseed Curling Custard gives medium-strong hold with a softer finish — the everyday choice for defined curls in normal weather. The Curl Defining Gel gives strong, humidity-proof hold — the choice for monsoon, humid coastal weather, and maximum frizz control. Rule of thumb: normal day, reach for the custard; humid day or monsoon, reach for the gel.
What gives the custard its hold — is it free from synthetic or plastic film-formers?
The hold comes from plant-based bio-polymers — flax seed, chia seed, and naturally derived film-formers — not the petroleum-based synthetic polymers like PVP and polyquaterniums that most gels and custards use. That means the custard holds curls cleanly, washes out without buildup, and meets Curly Girl Method standards. You get lasting definition from plant sources, not synthetic film-formers.
Does the custard define curls without making them crunchy?
Yes. The custard sets to a soft cast — much lighter than a strong-hold gel — and once your hair is dry, you scrunch it gently with your palms to break the cast. This leaves curls defined, springy, and touchable, not crunchy or stiff. The moisturizing flax, chia, argan, and avocado oils keep the finish soft.
Can I use Flaxseed Curling Custard every day?
Yes — this is the everyday styler in the Ashba range. The medium-strong, plant-based hold is designed for daily defined curls in normal weather. It washes out cleanly with no buildup, so daily use is fine. Save the Curl Defining Gel for humid days and monsoon when you need stronger, humidity-proof hold.
Is the custard a curl enhancing or curl defining product?
Both. As a curl enhancing and curl defining custard, it does two jobs: it enhances your natural curl pattern by encouraging curls to clump and form, and it defines and holds that pattern through the day. Among curl enhancing products, the custard stands out because it adds medium-strong hold so the definition lasts — making it one of the better options for anyone searching for the best curl defining cream or best cream for curly hair that actually holds, not just softens.
Can I use the custard on fine or wavy hair?
It works best on medium to coarse curls. Fine hair can find the custard too heavy and may lose volume — the Curl Styling Serum or Curl Volumizing Foam are lighter and better suited. For wavy hair, use the custard only if your waves are coarse; fine or loose waves should use a lighter styler to avoid weighing them down.
How much custard should I use and how do I apply it?
Use a generous coin-to-tablespoon amount depending on hair length and density. Apply to soaking wet hair after your leave-in, section by section, smoothing with praying hands and then raking and scrunching to form clumps. Too little and curls won't hold; too much and they take longer to dry. Coarse or long hair needs more than fine or short hair.
Does it contain real flaxseed and chia seed?
Yes. Flax seeds and chia seeds are hero ingredients, providing natural curl-defining hold — effectively a flaxseed hair gel and chia seed gel for curly hair in one. They're combined with argan oil, avocado oil, and jojoba esters for moisture and shine. This is a genuine seed-gel-based custard, not a synthetic formula with flaxseed added as a marketing claim.
Can men use Flaxseed Curling Custard for curly hair?
Yes. It works as a curl defining custard for men with curly or coily hair — gender-neutral and formulated for hold and curl pattern, not gender. For shorter hair, use less and work it through with your fingers. Men with curly hair get defined, daily hold and frizz control without the wet-look stiffness of drugstore gels.
Can I layer Flaxseed Curling Custard with other Ashba stylers?
Yes. Apply Ashba Leave-In Conditioner (or Curl Moisture Milk for coarse hair) first for moisture, then the custard for definition and hold. On humid days, you can layer a little Curl Defining Gel over the custard for extra humidity-proof hold. Always layer wettest and lightest first, finishing with the styler that provides hold.

"Being curly-haired myself, I knew the struggle that one has to face every day. After years of work, we are proud to present the first ever curly hair care brand of India!" - Asha Barrak, Founder
I use this on my own 3b curls but I also tried a tiny bit on my toddler's adorable ringlets and it works beautifully on her fine, delicate hair too. The gentle, natural formulation is safe enough that I feel comfortable using it on my child. Her little ringlets look picture-perfect! This is a multi-generational curly product in our household now.
I used to rely on chemical-laden gels with synthetic polymers and my hair was getting brittle and dull over time. Switching to this flaxseed custard has made a huge difference. My hair is shinier, healthier, and the curls are actually better defined than with chemical gels. I will never go back.
Something magical happens with this custard by day 2 and 3 — the curls actually look better than on wash day! The oils in the formula keep absorbing overnight and by the next morning my hair looks incredible without any refreshing needed. I use it once a week and my curls look great for the entire week. Truly impressive staying power from a natural product.
This custard is incredibly concentrated — I made the mistake of using too much initially and my hair looked wet for hours. Once I learned to use just a small amount, the results were outstanding. Bouncy, defined, frizz-free curls that last for days. The value is fantastic because you use so little each time that the jar lasts for months. A quality investment for your curl routine.
My 3c curls have never looked better than since I started using this custard. The definition is crisp, the shine is gorgeous, and the hold lasts for at least two days. I use it over the Ashba Leave-In Conditioner and the combo is perfect. The natural ingredient list gives me peace of mind — I know exactly what is going into my hair and it is all good. An exceptional product.
