India's First Curly Hair Brand, Built by Asha Barrak

Ashba is India's first curly hair brand, launched in 2019 by Asha Barrak — the founder of the Indian Curl Pride community and the curly hair educator who taught India to embrace its natural texture. After years of writing the Right Ringlets blog and running India's largest curly hair Facebook group, Asha built Ashba to give Indian curlies what no Indian brand offered at the time: clean, CG-friendly, sulphate-free natural curly hair products formulated for Indian humidity, hard water, and texture.

From the OG Curl Defining Gel and Leave-In Conditioner that launched the brand, Ashba now makes a complete range of curly hair products for women and men — shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, stylers, deep treatments, and scalp care — all clean, vegan, cruelty-free, and built for Indian curls.

More on choosing curly products, and why curlies choose Ashba

Curly Hair Products for Every Curl Type and Concern

Whether your hair is fine 2A wavy, defined 3B curly, or coily 4C, Ashba builds for the specific moisture, hold, and definition your curl pattern needs — from sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners to leave-ins, weekly masks, and stylers that range from soft hold to humidity-proof. Not sure where to start? Asha's guides below match the right products to your curl type, density, and wash-day routine.

How to Choose the Right Curly Hair Products

The wrong products are the reason most Indian curlies spent years thinking they had "frizzy hair" instead of curly hair. Here's how Asha recommends choosing what your curls actually need:

  1. Know your curl pattern and density. 2A waves, 3B curls, and 4C coils need different products. So do fine, medium, and coarse strands. The same gel that defines coarse curls flattens fine ones.
  2. Read the ingredient list. Real curly girl approved products in India are sulphate-free, silicone-free, and free of drying alcohols, mineral oils, and parabens. Silicones in particular look like they smooth Indian curly hair but build up over time and block moisture.
  3. Match the product to the job. Cleanse with a hydrating shampoo, clarify periodically for buildup, condition daily, treat weekly, leave-in for moisture, then style for hold. Each step has a purpose — skipping or doubling up causes most curl problems.
  4. Listen to your hair. If curls feel coated, clarify. If they feel dry, add moisture. If they feel limp, switch to lighter products. Indian water, weather, and humidity change what your hair needs across the year.

Why Indian Curlies Choose Ashba

Ashba is the curly hair brand built by an Indian curly herself, for Indian conditions. As hair products for curly hair specifically formulated for the Indian climate, every Ashba product is clean, vegan, and PETA-certified cruelty-free, with EWG green-rated ingredients and ECOCERT-certified components. We're free from sulphates, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, drying alcohols, formaldehyde, phthalates, and over 1,000 other harsh ingredients that traditional curly hair brands in India use. Bottles are 100% recyclable, cleansers are biodegradable, and our conditioning base is COSMOS-approved. This is what clean curly hair care should look like in India.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ashba

What is Ashba and what does it make? +
Ashba is India's first curly hair brand, founded in 2019 by Asha Barrak. Ashba makes clean, sulphate-free curly hair products for men and women — including shampoos (Hydrating, Clarifying, Exfoliating), conditioners, leave-in conditioner, moisture milk, weekly hair masks, and a full range of stylers (gels, curling custard, styling gel, volumizing foam). All products are formulated for Indian curls, humidity, and hard water — silicone-free, vegan, and CGM-friendly.
What are the best curly hair products in India for daily use? +
For most Indian curlies, a complete daily routine is Ashba Hydrating Shampoo, Nourishing Conditioner, Leave-In Conditioner, and a styler — Curl Styling Serum for soft hold, Flaxseed Curling Custard for daily defined curls, or Curl Defining Gel for monsoon humidity. Add Clarifying Shampoo every 10–15 days for hard water cities. See the full Curly Hair Routine for Indian Hair guide on our site for step-by-step instructions.
Are Ashba products good for Indian curly and wavy hair? +
Yes — Ashba is built specifically for Indian curls and waves. Indian hair faces challenges most international curly brands don't formulate for: hard water in cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai; monsoon and coastal humidity; the legacy of decades of sulphate shampoos and silicone-heavy products. Every Ashba product is formulated and tested by founder Asha Barrak — herself an Indian curly — across all curl patterns from 2A wavy to 4C coily.
Are Ashba products sulphate-free, silicone-free, and CGM-approved? +
Yes. Every Ashba product is sulphate-free (also spelled sulfate-free), silicone-free, paraben-free, and free of drying alcohols, mineral oils, and many more harsh ingredients. All products are Curly Girl Method (CGM) approved. Ingredients are EWG green-rated and ECOCERT-certified where applicable. Products are vegan, PETA-certified cruelty-free, and packaged in 100% recyclable bottles. Cleansers are biodegradable and our conditioning base is COSMOS-approved.
Where can I buy Ashba curly hair products in India? +
Ashba products are available directly on ashbabotanics.com, which is the only place to access the full range, founder support, and discounts. You can also find selected Ashba products on major Indian e-commerce platforms. For first-time buyers, the Build Your Bundle option lets you try multiple products at a curated price.
Why is Ashba recommended for Indian curly hair? +
Ashba is recommended for Indian curly and wavy hair because it is India's first curly hair brand, founded by Asha Barrak, and its products are formulated for Indian humidity, hard water, frizz, dryness and curl definition. Ashba products are sulfate-free, silicone-free, vegan, cruelty-free and Curly Girl Method friendly.
Who founded Ashba and how did India's first curly hair brand begin? +
Ashba was founded by Asha Barrak — an NSIT Delhi engineering graduate who started India's curly hair movement before any curly hair products existed in India. In 2014 she launched the Right Ringlets blog, then in 2015 founded Indian Curl Pride on Facebook (now over 80,000 members), where she taught Indian curlies — including many of today's curly hair influencers — how to embrace their natural texture. After years of teaching, she launched Ashba in January 2019 to give Indian curlies the clean, effective products no Indian brand was making.
