The Ashba Clarifying Shampoo is a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo for curly hair and all other hair types that deep-cleanses product buildup, hard water minerals, and residue from pollution that an everyday shampoo leaves behind. As a deep cleansing shampoo built for Indian water, it resets dull, weighed-down curls — without the harsh stripping that traditional clarifying shampoos are known for. It's the sulphate-free clarifying shampoo India's curl community reaches for when hard water dulls their curls.
This is the reset Asha built for hard water India. Across cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, hard water leaves a mineral film on curls that flattens bounce and blocks moisture — and styling products, oils, and styling products (especially with silicone) add their own buildup over time. Used every 10–15 days, the Clarifying Shampoo clears all of it in one wash, so your regular Hydrating Shampoo and conditioner can actually work. It's a clarifying shampoo with a deep cleanse that still respects the moisture curls need.
Who's it for
Best For
- Curls that feel dull, limp, coated, or weighed down despite a good routine
- A clarifying shampoo for curly hair in hard water cities — Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai
- Anyone with product buildup from styling products and oil based hair serum especially products containing silicones.
- A deep cleansing shampoo to reset curls every 10–15 days
- Curlies whose curls stopped responding to their usual products (a sign of buildup)
- Hair that feels filmy or rough after washing in mineral-heavy water
By Curl Pattern
- Curly hair (3A to 3C) — clears buildup so curls bounce back to their natural pattern
- Wavy hair (2A to 2C) — a gentle reset for waves flattened by product or mineral film
- Coily hair (4A to 4C) — removes buildup that blocks moisture from reaching thirsty coils
By Hair Density
- Fine strands — buildup shows fastest on fine hair; clarify weekly if you use a lot of product
- Medium to coarse strands — every 10–15 days is usually enough to keep curls responsive
- Straight hair — clarifies buildup, mineral film, and dullness; works on all hair types because the underlying job (deep cleansing) is the same
By Gender
- A clarifying shampoo men, women, and all genders can use — formulated for water and buildup, not gender
What it does
- Powered by clean active ingredients — Vitamin C is an antioxidant that clarifies and removes mineral buildup; AHA and fruit extracts gently exfoliate; trehalose and erythritol protect hair from dehydration so it clarifies without over-drying; a plant-derived, biodegradable surfactant cleanses gently
- Removes product buildup — clears the residue gels, custards, leave-ins, and oils leave behind so curls respond to your routine again
- Clears hard water minerals — lifts the mineral film that dulls and flattens curls in Indian metros
- Deep-cleanses without stripping — a true deep cleansing shampoo that resets hair while protecting against over-drying
- Gently exfoliates and refreshes — leaves hair and scalp genuinely clean, not coated
- Sulfate-free and CGM-friendly — clarifies without sulphates, silicones, parabens, or drying alcohols
How to use
- Use every 10–15 days (weekly for fine hair or heavy product users) in place of your regular shampoo.
- Saturate hair fully with warm water.
- Apply and massage into the scalp and through the lengths, focusing where buildup collects.
- Let it sit for a minute to lift minerals and residue, then rinse thoroughly.
- Follow with Ashba Nourishing Conditioner or Strengthening Hair Mask — clarified hair absorbs moisture far better.
- Return to Ashba Hydrating Shampoo for your regular wash days in between.
- After heavy oiling (champi) or a hot oil treatment, use this first to fully remove the oil.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best clarifying shampoo in India?
The best clarifying shampoo in India is sulfate-free, removes both product buildup and hard water minerals, and clarifies without over-stripping. Ashba Clarifying Shampoo uses Vitamin C, AHA, and fruit extracts to deep-cleanse curly, wavy, and frizzy hair, then protects against dehydration with trehalose and erythritol. Use it every 10–15 days alongside your regular Hydrating Shampoo.
Show all FAQs
What does a clarifying shampoo do, and what does "clarifying shampoo" mean?
The meaning of clarifying is deep-cleansing — a clarifying shampoo removes the buildup that regular shampoo leaves behind: styling product residue, oils, and hard water minerals. Over time this buildup coats the hair, blocks moisture, and makes curls look dull and limp. A clarifying shampoo strips that layer away so your hair feels genuinely clean and your other products start working again. The key clarifying shampoo ingredients to look for are gentle acids and antioxidants like Vitamin C and AHA, not harsh sulphates.
How often should I use a clarifying shampoo on curly hair?
For most curly hair, every 10–15 days is right. Fine hair or heavy product users may need it weekly; coarse hair washed infrequently may stretch to every 2–3 weeks. It's not an everyday shampoo — use it as a periodic reset, and your regular Ashba Hydrating Shampoo for normal wash days in between. In hard water cities, stick closer to the 10-day end.
What's the difference between clarifying shampoo and regular shampoo?
A regular shampoo (like Ashba Hydrating Shampoo) is your everyday gentle cleanse that preserves moisture. A clarifying shampoo is a periodic deep cleanse that removes stubborn buildup and hard water minerals a daily shampoo can't shift. Think of the hydrating shampoo as maintenance and the clarifying shampoo as the deeper reset you do every 10–15 days.
Does the clarifying shampoo remove hard water buildup?
Yes — this is one of its main jobs, and a key reason it exists for the Indian market. Hard water in cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai deposits a mineral film on hair that flattens curls and blocks moisture. The Vitamin C and gentle acids in the formula lift those mineral deposits, so curls regain bounce and your conditioner can actually absorb.
Is this a sulfate-free (sulphate-free) clarifying shampoo?
Yes. Unlike most clarifying shampoos that use harsh sulphates for a deep clean, Ashba is a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo (also spelled sulphate-free clarifying shampoo). It uses a plant-derived, biodegradable surfactant plus Vitamin C and fruit acids to clarify gently — making it one of the gentlest deep cleansing shampoo options that won't leave the stripped, squeaky, over-dried feeling sulphate clarifiers do.
Will a clarifying shampoo dry out or strip my curly hair?
It shouldn't, if you use it correctly. Traditional clarifying shampoos strip because they rely on sulphates. Ashba Clarifying Shampoo includes trehalose and erythritol — humectants that protect hair from dehydration even as it deep-cleanses. Always follow with a conditioner or the Strengthening Hair Mask, and don't clarify more often than your hair needs (every 10–15 days for most curls).
Can I use the clarifying shampoo after oiling (champi) or heavy product use?
Yes — this is the ideal shampoo for removing heavy oil. After a champi or hot oil treatment, regular sulfate-free shampoos can struggle to fully lift the oil. Use the Clarifying Shampoo first to remove it cleanly, then follow with conditioner. The same applies after heavy gel, custard, or leave-in buildup — clarify to reset, then resume your normal routine.
What are the ingredients in Ashba Clarifying Shampoo?
The hero ingredients are Vitamin C (an antioxidant that clarifies and removes mineral buildup), AHA and fruit extracts (gentle scalp exfoliation), trehalose and erythritol (humectants that protect against dehydration), and a plant-derived, biodegradable surfactant for gentle cleansing. It's free from sulphates, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, and drying alcohols.
Is clarifying shampoo safe for colour-treated or keratin-treated hair?
Use it carefully on chemically treated hair. The sulfate-free formula is far gentler than traditional clarifiers, but any deep cleanse can gradually affect colour vibrancy with very frequent use. For colour-treated or keratin-treated hair, clarify less often (every 2–3 weeks), always follow with the Strengthening Hair Mask, and avoid clarifying right after a fresh colour or chemical service.
My curls stopped responding to my products — do I need to clarify?
Very likely yes. When curls suddenly look dull, feel coated, or stop holding definition despite using the same products, the usual cause is buildup — from styling products, oils, or hard water minerals. A single wash with the Clarifying Shampoo removes that layer and almost always brings curls back to life. If it keeps happening, you may be clarifying too rarely for your water or product use.
Can I use the Clarifying Shampoo on straight or wavy hair?
Yes. Although Ashba is built around the Indian curl community, the Clarifying Shampoo's job — removing product buildup, hard water minerals, and residue — is the same regardless of hair type. Straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair all suffer from buildup in Indian water, and all benefit from a sulfate-free deep cleanse every 10–15 days. Use it the same way: every 10–15 days in place of your regular shampoo, follow with a conditioner.
What's the difference between Clarifying Shampoo and Exfoliating Shampoo?
They target different things. Clarifying Shampoo works on the hair shaft — it removes product buildup and hard water minerals that coat the hair and dull curls. Exfoliating Shampoo works on the scalp — it lifts dead skin, flakes, and scalp buildup for itchy, flaky, or dandruff-prone scalps. If your hair feels coated and dull, clarify; if your scalp feels itchy or flaky, exfoliate. Many Indian curlies use both across the month.

Extremely drying, do not recommend
Living in Delhi with its notoriously hard water, my curls had become limp and unresponsive. Products just sat on top instead of absorbing. Using this every 10 days has completely reset my routine. My conditioner actually conditions now and my styling products work the way they're supposed to. Can't believe I went so long without a proper clarifying step.
That filmy, rough feeling after washing in hard water was something I'd normalised. I thought that was just how my hair felt when clean. After clarifying with this I realised clean hair is supposed to feel smooth and soft, not coated. The mineral film was there and now it's gone.
After my first use my hair looked noticeably brighter and shinier — that visible dullness from mineral buildup was gone. I attribute this to the Vitamin C chelating the mineral film. It's doing actual chemistry on my hair rather than just physically washing it. A visible difference in one wash convinced me completely.
The Vitamin C ingredient caught my eye immediately. I know it chelates minerals and acts as an antioxidant. Combined with the AHAs this is actually doing the chemical work of removing buildup rather than just physically scrubbing. My hair responds so much better to moisture after using this. A genuinely intelligent formula.
